I Want to See You, Just Once
2025-, Photography, moving image, and archival materials

The project emerged from the repeated journeys of fieldwork.
I had usually travelled by car directly to accommodation near the research site. Before one Spring Festival, I asked a young woman I had met through fieldwork whether she needed a ride back to her village. She then described her usual journey home: high-speed train, long-distance bus, informal rides, three-wheeled vehicles, and finally walking.

At that moment, I realised that the journeys I had considered difficult were still held together by a relatively continuous form of convenience. For her, reaching home meant completing the distance in stages, through repeated transfers, personal connections, and long periods of waiting.

I began asking women I had met through research, how they travelled to and from their villages. Their accounts gradually formed a list of routes. Following the directions they gave me, I took the same forms of transport and travelled to where each of them was, simply to meet her in person. Research ↗
